Simone Leigh is a ceramicist whose distinct and cool works are filled with content about feminism, postcolonial theory, politics, and race. Leigh mixes a sensitive treatment of materials and a deep academic awareness of theory. The two female busts on view are adorned with delicate porcelain roses that make up elaborate African hairstyles. But while their hair is detailed, their terracotta faces lack specificity and draw out concerns about stereotypes and how we confront the image of black women.
