Mindy Shapero’s sculptures are colorful rides down a rabbit hole. Her process is grounded in labor-intensive crafting techniques and her motivations derive from an interest in science fiction and magical realism as well as her own personally constructed mythologies that she translates into both writing and artwork. Shapero makes sculptures that include goofy and colorful wobbly lines and others that are breathtakingly detailed aggregations of materials. Her idiosyncratic structures exist in precarious states of balance and suggest a supernatural (or at least Dr. Seussian) origin.
Mindy Shapero received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and her MFA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Her work has been shown in exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH; Gallery Isa, Mumbai, India; Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft; Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA; Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, NY; CRG Gallery, New York, NY.
