Kosmaj Toy is modeled after a typical Soviet / socialist monumental sculptural form, whimsically rendered here in red LEGOs. The material is recognizable and ubiquitous, used to comment on an old political symbol, seen from today’s perspective. Los Carpinteros bring together conflicting periods, values, styles and subjects, allowing them to provoke discussion and thought, with the possibility of changing perspectives on both history and current situations.
Los Carpinteros is a collective formed in 1991, while the 3 founders, Marco Castillo (b. 1971), Dagoberto Rodríguez (b. 1969) and Alexandre Arrechea (b. 1970) attended Instituto Superior de Arte, all graduating in 1994. Arrechea left the group in 2003 to pursue his solo career. Los Carpinteros has recent shows in Madrid, Hong Kong, Zurich and New York. Los Carpinteros work is part of permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim, Centro Cultural de Arte Contemporaneo, as well as others. They live and work between Havana and Madrid.
