Joan Wobst is a Columbus based artist known for her sculptures inspired by history. Boy with a Rooster is a small ceramic sculpture of a young African American boy dressed in his Sunday best, taken from a photograph by Richard Samuel Roberts. The image is the cover of A True Likeness: The Black South of Richard Samuel Roberts 1920-1936, published by Wobst’s brother-in-law in South Carolina in 1977. Wobst found the photographs by this African American photographer compelling for the rich sepia tones and the dignity of the subjects. The photographer worked by day as a custodian in the U.S. Post office in Columbia, South Carolina and on the side as a chronicler of his community.
