Hongbo Xu’s porcelain sculpture titled Clone 07-4 is an assemblage of many small human figures entangled and massed together in an inverted pyramid. The work emits an unfathomable and uncanny energy where the mass of bodies seems to have regularity from one angle and becomes chaotic jumble from another angle. Xu’s sensitive command of materials allows for a contemplation of these babies. The piece is ambiguous as it could be a commentary of scientific experimentation, China’s massive population, or the nature of the individual.
