Heather Gwen Martin
Born 1977, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Lives and works in Los Angeles, California
Heather Gwen Martin’s large, bold, colorful abstract paintings are show stealers in any space. Their saturated tones and juxtaposed abstract biomorphic forms are on the verge of creating objects or characters. Playful and stimulating, these paintings are brilliant, if exaggerated, expanses of lurid colors that take viewers on a slightly unsettling joy ride. Martin’s is a bright and beautiful world full of curves. Bulbous forms swell, lines move like tendrils or hairline cracks across expanses of color. Scale is an essential component to her paintings where compositions are consistently asymmetrical and askew. Interested in neuroscience, Martin is fascinated by our interactions with the world, how we respond to stimuli, both cognitively and physically. Her paintings are fascinating examples of two-dimensional works that depict – abstractly – a sense of depth and vibration where gaudy colors meet.
Heather Gwen Martin received her BA from the University of California, San Diego in 1999 and attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has had solo gallery shows at Luis De Jesus in Los Angeles and San Diego and at Lombardo Studios Gallery, Culver City, CA. Group exhibitions include: LA Louver, Venice, CA; Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA; LA Mart, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla, CA; Den Contemporary, Los Angeles, CA; MKG benefitting Rice University Art Gallery, Houston, TX; and Southwestern College Art Gallery, Chula Vista, CA.
