Hank Willis Thomas’ Strange Fruit shows an athlete decked out in Nike sneakers dunking a basketball through a noose. The position of his body and the title of the world refer to the grim history of lynching in the United States. Thomas uses photography and commercial imagery drawn from advertising in his conceptual practice. His tone is sharply and smartly inquisitive and the resulting works are blunt views on the persistent institutional racism and sexism that pervades our society.
