Join us on March 16 for a spotlight tour with Professor Robert K. Wallace. Robert will discuss the Deckle Edges prints in the context of other works by Stella on view in the Lines/Edges: Frank Stella On Paper exhibition. With all 9 of the Deckle Edges on display together, the talk will address works in that series individually, in relation to each other, and in relation to Melville’s Moby-Dick. Wallace will also have a few words to say about Stella’s Loohooloo collage, which dates from the same period as the Deckle Edges.
Robert K Wallace is Regents Professor of English at Northern Kentucky University, where he specializes in Literature and the Arts. He became fascinated with Stella’s Moby-Dick series when he saw seven brand-new Wave prints at the Carl Solway Gallery in Cincinnati in November 1989. His quest to learn more about the series took him twice to Japan, twice to Europe, and to many sites in the United States including Stella’s New York studio, where he had multiple interviews with the arts and saw many new works in progress. On a trip to Tyler Graphics in 1993 he saw several of the Moby-Dick Deckle Edges in production. Wallace’s book Frank Stella’s Moby-Dick: Words and Shapes was published in 2000 and reprinted in 2007.
