Lives and works in New York
Butt Johnson’s elaborate forays into mark making on paper are based on an interest in belief systems, mythologies, and technology. Or rather, Johnson’s interest lies in the fact that these narratives exist, that people come up with conspiracy theories or ideas about progress. He is a thoughtful artist who invented the persona of Butt Johnson while in college. The artist appeared for a senior year critique dressed as a middle-aged, polyester suit-wearing man named Butt Johnson. This pseudonym has accompanied his work ever since. Johnson’s work has shifted towards abstraction even as his technique of skillfully drawing or making prints with intense detail remains the same.
Butt Johnson received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI in 2001. Solo and group exhibitions include: CRG Gallery, New York, NY; Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, George Washington University, DC; 247365 & KnowMoreGames, Brooklyn, NY; Senior & Shopmaker Gallery, New York, NY; Geoffrey Young Gallery, Great Barrington, MA; Bill Brady KC, Kansas City, MO; Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, KS; 319 Scholes, Brooklyn, NY; Eric Firestone Gallery, Easthampton, NY; BAM, New York, NY; and The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN.
