Born 1979, Las Vegas, Nevada
Lives and works in Claremont, California
References to Las Vegas implosions, astrophysics, and interior design detonate across Brian Porray’s giant canvases. His paintings are impressive collages of bold, rigorous, and exuberant abstract signs that encompass the visual tricks of optical art, the casual rebellion of graffiti art, the drips of gestural painting, and the skill of hard-edged geometries. Standing close to his work is an experience of a vortex, where particulars are just as fascinating as the overall chaotic structure of the whole. If work could make sound, Porray’s paintings would have the loud and frenetic rhythmic cacophony of shattering materials.
Brian Porray received his BFA from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2005 and his MFA from University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2010. Gallery exhibitions include Western Project, Los Angeles, CA and Donna Beam Fine Art, Trifecta Gallery, and Grant Hall Gallery all in Las Vegas, NV. His work has been included in exhibitions at Barrick Museum, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, NV; Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA; Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek, CA; Peggy Phelps Gallery, Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA.
