Tomory Dodge often paints diptychs that seem to be adventures in Rorschach test designs. It is psychology turned fine art as Dodge paints one half of a composition only to turn to its side and attempt to recreate a mirror image by hand. This is the intriguing abstract play that the artist uses to explore the qualities of paint and the endless variety of ways it can appear across a canvas. His is a joyous application of pigments in smart and exuberant patterns. This is a fascinating moment in Tomory Dodge’s career that has included figurative paintings and powerful collages that are densely packed with elaborate designs that take viewers through the night sky, dark forests, or a kaleidoscopic array of colors and form.
Tomory Dodge received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California in 2004. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at Alison Jacques, London, UK; Acme, Los Angeles, CA; Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, NC; Monica De Cardenas Galleria, Zuoz, Switzerland; CRG Gallery, New York; Beta Pictoris, Birmingham, Alabama; Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA; and Buchmann Galerie, Berlin.
