El Anatsui makes monumental objects that are armor, chainmail, protective scrim, abstract painting, minimalist sculpture, and fantastical coverings. They are sculptural, pictorial, and architectural wonders. Large swaths of textile-like materials flow across walls or rooms taking up the space and filling it with magic. This magic comes partly from Anatsui’s choice of materials. Bottle caps and labels, wood, and ceramics transform from quotidian commodities or base material into aesthetic collages – all ruche, ruffle, and flounce.
