Edouard Duval Carrie’s painting in US IS THEM shows a man and a woman - Adam and Eve – holding hands as a sunny decorative background reminds us of a tropical version of Kehinde Wiley’s sumptuous floral backdrops. Close inspection of the figures reveals that their bodies have been constructed from collaged elements. The images are ones that Duval Carrie downloaded from the Internet – they are bacteria magnified to show their abstract qualities. They are also a reference to stereotypes. The artist explains, "They’ve been saying that Haitians carry all sorts of diseases so I’m playing with the idea."
